Narrated Ibn Abbas

... The names (of the idols) formerly belonged to some pious men of the people of Noah ﷺ, and when they died Satan inspired their people to prepare and place idols at the places where they used to sit, and to call those idols by their names.

The people did so, but the idols were not worshipped till those people (who initiated them) had died and the origin of the idols had become obscure, whereupon people began worshipping them.

071:001 Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, (saying), "Warn your people before a painful punishment comes to them."

011:025-26 And We had certainly sent Noah to his people, (saying), "Indeed, I am to you a clear warner. That you worship none but Allah. Indeed, I fear for you the punishment of a painful day."

071:002-4 He said, "O my people, indeed I am a clear warner to you. (Saying), 'Worship Allah, fear Him and obey me. Allah will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time (set by) Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew.' "

011:027 So the leaders among those who disbelieved from his people said, " We do not see you but as a man like ourselves. And we do not see you followed except by those who are the lowest of us, and they followed you without thinking. And we do not see in you any merit over us. Rather, we think you are liars."

023:024 But the leaders among those who disbelieved from his people said, "This is not but a man like yourselves who wishes to make himself superior over you. And if Allah had willed (to send a messenger), He would have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our forefathers.
